ARTIST RESIDENCY
Performing Arts Workshop provides opportunities for professional
artists in dance, theatre arts, creative writing, and
music to teach the creative process in public schools,
community centers, and homeless shelters/transitional
housing facilities in San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda,
and Marin counties.
Required Qualifications:
- A demonstrated commitment to youth development;
- Flexibility and willingness to learn the Workshop's
methodology;
- B.A. degree (or equivalent experience) in Dance, Theatre
Arts, Creative Writing, Music, and/or Education;
- Minimum 3-5 years professional teaching experience in
an academic setting;
- Flexible schedule;
- Willingness to work with classroom teachers, site coordinators,
and volunteers;
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication
skills; and
- Excellent computer and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- M.A. or MFA degree and/or teaching credential in Dance,
Theatre Arts, Creative Writing, Music, and/or Education;
- Experience working with English Learners, youth at risk
for academic failure, including students in the Special
Education and Juvenile Justice systems, and youth in homeless
shelters/housing facilities; and
- Knowledge of the Bay Area arts community.
Artists will...
- Teach 15 to 30-week residencies in Dance, Theatre
Arts, Creative Writing or Music;
- Teach in schools, community centers, and homeless shelters/housing
facilities with diverse ethnic populations;
- Learn the Workshop's teaching methodology;
- Write lesson plans for 30-60 minute classes;
- Participate in Staff Development Workshops;

Development Director
Performing Arts Workshop is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young people develop critical thinking, creative expression, and basic learning skills through the arts. In 1974, the Workshop launched Artists-in-Schools and became one of the first nonprofit organizations in San Francisco to place trained teaching artists in public schools and child development centers. Today, the Workshop offers Theater Arts, World Dance, Music, Creative Writing and other arts residencies to more than 80 low-income public schools, child development centers, juvenile halls, county/court schools, and transitional housing facilities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2007, the Workshop served more than 6,500 at-risk youth with an operating budget of $1.25 million.
The Development Director will be responsible for the co-creation and implementation of Performing Arts Workshop’s development strategy. The Development Director reports directly to the Executive Director and qualifies for medical and vision benefits, as well as a liberal paid time off package. The position is exempt/full-time with a salary starting at $45,000 - $55,000 DOE. The last date to apply is May 15th, 2008.
Major Responsibilities:
- Research and apply for new funding opportunities (public, foundation, corporate);
- Submit mid-term and final reports to current funders;
- Increase the Workshop’s base of individual donors by identifying prospects and cultivating current donors;
- Assist in the planning and management of major fundraising events;
- Work with Board committee chairs to set agenda for Fundraising, Marketing and Special Event Committee meetings;
- Assist in the development and design of agency publications, including print and online versions of the Workshop’s annual report and quarterly newsletter;
- Represent Performing Arts Workshop in the community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree;
- 3+ years development or marketing experience;
- Knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, including proposal writing (public, corporate and foundation), individual giving, special events;
- Excellent analytical thinking skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy;
- Ability to work effectively in a collegial and positive environment with high professional standards and productivity;
- A self-starter with an ability to operate successfully and with minimal supervision;
- Experience in working cooperatively with management, staff, donors, and Board of Directors;
- Knowledge of Bay Area philanthropic community a plus;
- Commitment to and strong belief in the value of arts education for all Bay Area youth.
