In May, the Workshop will begin the 4th Cycle of Preschool for All (PFA) Residencies, the last for this school year. In partnership with First 5 San Francisco, the Workshop is the Arts provider for all Preschool for All Child Childcare Providers in San Francisco. Artists from the Workshop provide Creative Movement to preschoolers, developing students’ gross and fine motor skills, working on focus and concentration, and building a strong cognitive base for language and literacy development. After participating, students share their experience by performing for parents, caregivers, and the community. If you have questions in regards to this program, please contact Karena Salmond, Program Manager for Artists-in-Schools.

In cooperation with the Department of Children Youth and Their Families, the Workshop printed an After-School for All project newsletter which went home with parents and caregivers of the students participating in the program. After-School for All works in conjunction with a number of community centers and after-school programs in both the Bayview Hunter’s Point and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods of San Francisco. For more information in regards to this program, please check out the Newsletter section of the website.

A number of Workshop Artists participated in a special Workshop on April 26th.  Creative Writers, Theater and Creative Movement/World Dance Artists came together to explore ways in which these three art forms can provide an integrated curriculum. Using a jumping off writing exercise created by Matthew Davison, Brooke Gessay presented it as Creative Movement, followed by Noah Martin who presented a version using adapted scenarios informed by Theater of the Oppressed exercises. While further development is needed to formulate a usable curriculum, the Artists were excited to use different art forms to achieve similar objectives. For more information in regards to this workshop, please contact Gary Draper.

On May 15th, the Workshop’s annual event - The Mighty Fair, will be held at Mighty Galleries. Expect an exciting evening of dining, dancing, music, and other varied entertainment. Proceeds will go towards making the Workshop an even better leader in the arts education field. For more information and to purchase tickets, please contact the Administrative and Development Assistant, Devon Nandagiri.

In April, the Workshop received $75,000 from the Sidney E. Frank Foundation and $30,000 from the Kimball Foundation for general support of the Artists-in-Schools program during the 2008-09 fiscal year. Both of these grants help keep the Workshop an active high quality arts provider in the San Francisco Bay Area. For more information on Workshop funding, please contact the Development Director, Nick Hutchinson.

Finally, the Professional Artists on staff pursue their art outside of the Workshop. You can see them at one of the events below.
